Some children are hungry and without food on the weekends. The Food4Kids Program will provide a backpack of food for the child to take home each Friday.

Suggested Food Donations:

• Canned Meat (tuna, chicken, etc.)
• Canned Veggies & Beans
• Canned Pasta (Spaghettios, 14oz)
• Canned Soup
• Juice Boxes/Pouches
• Fruit and Pudding Cups
• Breakfast Items (oatmeal packets, breakfast bars, single serving cereals)
• Snack Bars (granola, etc)
• Macaroni & Cheese
• Snacks (single servings of raisins, pretzels, animal crackers, etc.)
• Milk (shelf stable)
• Peanut Butter and Jelly

More about the program:

19% of Alachua County's children are affected by poverty, and many of these children are hungry on the weekends due to food instability in the home. Many children that qualify for free and reduced lunch rates have been identified by as being chronically hungry by their school's administration. The Food4Kids program at will send home a rolling backpack full of food every Friday to these children who are at risk of hunger on the weekends and breaks during the school year. The backpack will include enough food for the child and siblings in the home. It will be returned to the school on Monday and re-filled by volunteers for that upcoming Friday.

The community's support will be vital to launch and sustain the backpack project, and extend the program into multiple schools in our community. Donations of wheeled backpacks, listed food items, and financial gifts are greatly appreciated. The program costs approximately $6 per week or $250 per school year for each child. We expect the program to grow as we become aware of more children in need at area elementary schools.

The future vision of the Food4Kids program is to launch in all schools where children are in need, starting here in Alachua County. I will be happy to talk to you and answer any questions you have.
